Principles of Alignment

WAYS TO FIND ALIGNMENT IN YOGA POSTURES:

Posture alignment is about how the muscles and bones are aligned to support the body during yoga practice. Creating a grounded foundation is the key, supporting back, neck, limbs allows for free movements and prevents injuries. Alignment in posture offers stability and balance.

Suggestions for better alignment:

  • Lengthen the spine, elongate the back and keep it lifted during practice.
  • Keep shoulders away from ears, actively bring shoulders down and away.
  • Engage core muscles, trunk and torso to support the spine.
  • Draw the abdomen in and up and the tailbone down. Finding alignment by tucking the tailbone protects the lower back by engaging the core muscles.
  • Engage all four corners of your feet. Distribute weight equally in the front and back of each foot. Arches lifting up, shins, knees and legs feel alive and grounded.
